New York travel advice: Latest news after two children attacked by sharks

New York locals Lola Pollina, 12, and a 13-year-old boy, were bitten by a shark while swimming in the water. It is the first attack in the waters surrounding the city in over ten years. The last shark incident last occurred in 1948, prompting fears for tourists. While attacks are rare in New York and Fire Island, where the attacks happened, it is believed the animal was at least three foot long. Is New York still safe for tourists? There is no current travel update for New York from the UK Foreign Office. Police are investigating the incidents and the beaches remained closed for the duration of the day. The incidents happened less than five miles apart and local authorities are trying to determine what sharks they were from a tooth retrieved from the boy's leg. The rise in sharks in the water has also been reported in the UK with a number of creatures plaguing the coastlines. Thanks to water temperature rising, more sharks have been seen on the coast of Devon and Cornwall. Tiger sharks and blacktips, which are responsible for many attacks in Florida, are on the increase.
