Thousands of passengers are being warned about road closures around East Midlands Airport as the airport gears up for its busiest few weeks of the year. Work on the M1 and other roads and upgrades to the airport check-in systems have led some flight operators to extend their check-in opening hours. The airport said two lanes will be closed on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between J23a and 24a today. Further disruption is expected next week. However, a spokesman for the Castle Donington airport said no flights on Friday had been affected by a strike among Irish Ryanair pilots. Ryanair – which flies to destinations such as France, Greece, Germany, Italy and Ireland from the Leicestershire airport – said 4, 000 Irish customers had been affected by strike action.
